In order to replace Saemaeul trains that have been in operation since 1974, KORAIL introduced 23 units of the new ITX-Saemaeul trains, the electric passenger trains developed with domestic technology. These trains will cover 30 daily runs in the electrified Gyeongbu, Honam and Jeolla lines, which have been part of 50 daily runs by the 30 units of old Saemaeul Trains. ITX-Saemaeul consists of six trains, each with the capacity of 50 to 74 seats and a total of 376 seats per unit. It achieved reduction in noise and vibration in high-speed operation that resulted in the enhancement of the train’s safety and comfort. It also provides such facilities as wheelchair space, nursery, and luggage space, which adds the comfort.
